QUESTION 37

What kind of life did Christ live on earth?

ANSWER

Christ lived a life of perfect obedience to the law of God.

We talk a lot about Jesus’ death on the cross to pay for our sins. And it’s certainly very important! It’s how he paid the price of our sin! But did you know that Jesus’ life was just as important as his death? After all, if he was a law-breaking sinner like you and me, Jesus couldn’t finish his mission to save us from sin. Instead, he would need someone to come and save him, too! Thankfully, Jesus wasn’t a law-breaking sinner like you and me!

Peter was one of Jesus’ disciples. He followed Jesus around closely for three years, watching everything Jesus did. Now, we all have good days and bad days, happy days and grumpy days. But after watching Jesus all those years, listen to what old Pete had to say: “He committed no sin, and no deceit (lie) was found in his mouth.” (1 Pet. 2:22) If someone watched you closely for three years, would they say that you never did anything wrong, not even once? Well, that’s precisely what Peter said about Jesus! “I was with the guy every single day, and I tell ya, he was absolutely perfect!”

Hebrews 4:15 goes on to tell us that Jesus was “tempted in every way, just as we are – yet he did not sin.” During his days on earth, Jesus faced many temptations, times of testing to see if he would do right or wrong. At one point, even the devil himself came and tried to tempt Jesus with his tricks. But the Bible is clear: Jesus passed every single one of those tests! He lived a life of perfect obedience to God’s law. He obeyed all Ten Commandments. He obeyed the two Great Commandments. In fact, he obeyed every law found in the Bible! He avoided all the things God tells us not to do and completed all the good things God tells us to do. If you were grading Jesus’ life, he would get an A+++++++++ (and more)!

Incredibly, he did it every day of his life. He obeyed God’s laws as a grown-up, as a teenager, as a kid, and even as a cute little baby! He was the only human being to ever finish his life with a perfect score of law-keeping. And because he was sinless, it made him the perfect person to save imperfect lawbreakers like you and me!
